Word for the Year

DO.

Each year on their birthdays, my aunt and uncle choose a word for the year. I learned this on my most recent birthday and liked the idea so much, I adopted it for myself. After a great deal of thought and deliberation, I chose the word do as my word for the year. I selected this word because I realized how often I hold myself back from doing things for silly reasons (silly reasons = fear of the unknown, mostly). I am going to use this page to record the ways in which I incorporate my word into my life.

  1. The Portage Lakes Polar Bear Jump - February 18. Read about it here.
  2. Tandem skydiving - purchased, scheduled September 9.
  3. The Color Run - June 16. Read about it here.
  4. The Band Perry/Brad Paisley concert - June 15.
  5. Start climbing (again)! I spent two summers outdoor rock climbing and have always wanted to take it back up. This was actually the inspiration behind my word for the year. I am determined to get myself back on the cliffs! I have purchased an instruction class to re-learn the basics and hope to spend quite a bit of time at the indoor rock gym. Date TBA.
  6. Write a letter Facebook message to an artist expressing my appreciation for his band's music - May 2. I felt a little silly doing this because I didn't want to come across as a crazed fan, but my mom encouraged me to since I met the artist through a family friend in December. I love the band, not only because of how they sound, but because I relate so well to their lyrics.
  7. Ride a motorcycle - May 17.
  8. The Head and the Heart - July 31.
  9. Update my glasses prescription - August 23. You may be wondering why this made this list since it's pretty mundane. It made the list because I am admittedly terrible about making appointments to do these things. Doctor, eye, and dental appointments all take the backseat and I put them off indefinitely until I finally bite the bullet and do it. Since my glasses prescription is embarrassingly outdated, this is a huge deal. Two days after my appointment, I ordered new glasses!
  10. Run For Your Lives Pittsburgh - scheduled October 1.
